Notary Public

A notary public is a state-appointed public official who acts as an impartial witness to deter fraud by verifying the identity of document signers and administering oaths. They ensure signers are who they claim to be and are signing documents willingly, authenticating signatures and making documents official. Notaries perform various services, including witnessing and certifying documents, taking affidavits, and administering oaths.

Key duties:

  • Witnessing documents: A notary observes the signing of important documents to ensure the person signing is the one they claim to be.

  • Verifying identity: They confirm the signer's identity using satisfactory evidence, such as a driver's license, passport, or state-issued ID.

  • Administering oaths and affirmations: Notaries can administer oaths for affidavits and other legal documents.

  • Certifying documents: They can certify documents  and other official paperwork to ensure authenticity.

Important distinctions:

  • Not a lawyer: A notary public is not the same as a lawyer and does not provide legal advice.

  • Impartial official: Notaries are expected to be impartial witnesses and follow state-mandated rules.
